This practical course is delivered in partnership with IDEXX. This half day session will help you understand the techniques for sample collection and in-house analysis of skin parasites and faecal parasites in dogs & cats, reptiles, equines and livestock.
You will be provided with comprehensive course notes and study aids to support the practical skills learnt. We will cover the following:
Skin Parasites:
• Understand how to collect and prepare skin and hair samples for in-house or reference lab exam.
• The preparation and use of a microscope
• Revise/recognise the skin parasites commonly found on companion animals
• Examine fixed slides of some of the parasites commonly found on companion animals
Practical Microbiology:
• Understand how to collect and prepare faecal samples for in-house or reference lab examination
• Carry out microbiology techniques
- Faecal flotation technique for worm egg identification in companion animal, andreptile samples.
- Modified McMasters technique for worm egg counts using a counting chamber inequine and livestock samples.
• The preparation and use of a microscope
• Examine fixed slides of some of the faecal parasites commonly found in faeces
Please come dressed appropriately for a practical course where you will be handling faeces.
