Patients presenting to the veterinary clinic with gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) are a surgical emergency and require rapid diagnosis and stabilisation for a good outcome to be achieved.

This half day course will present the latest information available on this challenging condition including the triage and initial assessment; and a logical approach on what needs to be done (and in what order!) to achieve a definitive diagnosis and stable patient for surgery.

There will also be discussion of the anaesthetic and surgical requirements and the nurse’s role in each of these steps will be considered.

Finally, a review of the available evidence on the known risk factors for GDV will be presented, providing advice that can be relayed to dog owners to decrease the risk of GDV in the future.
